Since the beginning, we’ve partnered with many well-established environmental organizations, but today we’re celebrating some incredible grassroots organizations, and their selfless leaders and volunteers, who fight hard to protect this planet, day in and day out. EARTHJUSTICE

“We are here because the earth needs a good lawyer.” Earthjustice uses the power of law to protect people and planet and combat climate change. Their fearless team of lawyers have advanced clean energy, fought for clean air and water, protected wild land from development, and stopped risky offshore drilling while holding polluting industries accountable. With support from individuals and foundations, they can represent clients for free.

Part of a growing movement of farmers, sustainable fashion activists, and makers who support a new, localized textile economy. Fibershed works alongside both fashion brands and farming communities to develop regional and regenerative fiber systems that protect the environment while generating high-quality natural fibers. Supporting healthy soil can have a long-lasting positive impact on local economies, the health of ecosystems, as well as our climate — healthy soil sequesters carbon! The 5 Gyres Institute

An estimated 8 million metric tons of plastic pollution enters our ocean every single year. Plastic pollutes our planet, threatens wildlife, and poses risks to human health (toxic chemicals from plastic are in our food chain now!). 5Gyres is committed to ending this global health crisis through science, education, and adventure. They make epic crossings, sailing through our ocean gyres, to collect (and share) the data we need to fix the problem. It’s not about cleaning up the mess — it’s about stopping the problem at the source and focusing on upstream solutions.

Bye Bye Plastic Bags

A youth-powered movement around the world to say NO to plastic bags. At the ages of 10 and 12, sisters Isabel and Melati Wijsen, started local — they wanted to clean up their home island of Bali, where the beaches and waterways were brimming with single-use plastics. Fast forward a few years, Bali has banned plastic bags, BBPB has reached over 45,000 youth across Indonesia, 350 local businesses agreed to drop single-use plastics, and Isabel and Melati are two of TIME’S 25 Most Influential Teens of 2018. 35 global chapters strong, their youth movement has started a ripple effect with global implications. Kids are 25% of the population, but they are 100% the future.

Changing Tides Foundation

A grassroots women-led effort to protect Mother Earth and the people who call it home. Started in 2016 by a group of waterwomen and adventurers — including Liz Clark and Leah Dawson — but most importantly friends, with a calling to help others. Their enthusiasm is inspiring and they prove that making a difference can be FUN! They set up a clean drinking water station in Mexico, mentored underprivileged teenage girls in Panama, taught girls how to surf in Dominican Republic, and they’ve launched a global call to action: the Plastic Swear Jar Challenge holds us accountable for the plastics we use daily (it kicks off on Earth Day)!

Kiss the Ground

Kiss the Ground is a nonprofit local to LA that’s having a global impact. Their focus is underfoot — SOIL. It’s the unheralded building block of life — we need healthy soil to grow our food and materials for our clothes, to support plants that generate oxygen, to filter and capture rainwater, and (most importantly) to sequester carbon. Excess carbon in our atmosphere is leading to a warming of our planet, and healthier soil — through regenerative farming and responsible land management — is part of the solution. Kiss the Ground is dedicated to spreading awareness for the importance of healthy soil and responsible farming, offering online classes for anyone interested, and works directly with farmers to improve their methods. There are more microorganisms in a teaspoon of healthy soil than there are humans on the planet — think about that!

Save the Waves

Save The Waves protects coastal ecosystems (and some of the best waves around the world) through long-term land conservation. They identify endangered surf zones, then work with local communities and policymakers to recognize their (economic, cultural, and environmental value) and ensure their ongoing protection. Through their World Surf Reserves program, the Save the Waves team has already had some major wins: surf zones in Malibu and Santa Cruz, California, Baja, Mexico, Punta de Lobos, Chile, and Noosa, Australia, and more are protected for our planet and our future enjoyment. Anyone can chip in by helping identify at-risk waves, at home or abroad.

Waterkeeper Alliance

Waterkeeper Alliance is a global network of grassroots leaders protecting everyone’s right to clean water. Their goal is to keep water drinkable, fishable, and swimmable by holding polluters accountable. Larger campaigns include supporting clean energy, calling for stricter regulation of industrial farming, and fighting to keep the Clean Water Act protections in place. Each chapter takes on local initiatives as well. The organization was started by a band of blue-collar fishermen on New York’s Hudson River in 1966 because industrial polluters were destroying their way of life. It’s grown into a global movement of 340 chapters across 44 countries and, because the network is so large, this is an easy group to get involved with — find your local Waterkeeper.

Protect our Winters

The past decade has been the warmest on record, winters are shorter, and weather patterns continue to shift. Some of the best ski mountains in the world have lost their snow in recent years, and the outdoor community took notice and was quick to respond with action. Protect our Winters was founded by professional snowboarder Jeremy Jones in 2007 and has played a key role in rallying the outdoor community and professional athletes, who live and play in nature, to stand up against climate change. Their focus is on youth education, advocacy, and community-based activism. Their community has grown to over 130,000 supporters worldwide. As POW says, “we all need winter.”

Take 3 for the Sea

An Australian environmental org with a simple call to action: take 3 pieces of rubbish every time you leave a beach or waterway. Take 3 proves that the little efforts add up to make a world of a difference — participants have collectively removed 10 million pieces of trash from coastlines across 129 countries annually! Most ocean plastic pollution starts out on land as litter, so this is one small way that we can make a dent in the issue and make pollution a thing of the past. Join the movement and take 3 or give $3 to support their community outreach and youth education program, then spread the work with #Take3ForTheSea.
